The festivities continued this past weekend as the United Way of Big Spring and Howard County and their agencies served up some holiday fun. The local Chapter 47 D.A.V. of Big Spring partnered with area volunteers and local business to ensure a special holiday meal was provided this year, to Veterans.
Non-retired veterans who are state employees can claim their active-duty military time toward retirement by making a payment equal to the monthly contribution an employee would make times the number of months active duty. Wartime veterans have preference in employment with state agencies or offices, as do widows and children of those killed on active duty. State agencies must practice veterans’ preference until they have reached 40% veteran employment.

State veterans homes fill an important need for veterans with low income and veterans who desire to spend their last years with "comrades" from former active-duty. The predominant service offered is nursing home care. VA nursing homes must be licensed for their particular state and conform with skilled or intermediate nursing services offered in private sector nursing homes in that state. State homes may also offer assisted living or domiciliary care which is a form of supported independent living. Official proof of disability (issued by the V.A.) or a Texas Driver License with “Disabled Veteran” designation must be shown each year when applying for this license and must state the rate of disability.
Recently, the D.A.V. of Big Spring Chapter 47 recognized two local businesses who have stepped up and supported local veterans. State Veterans Homes may request up to 65 percent of the cost of construction or acquisition of state nursing homes or domiciliary or for renovations to existing State Homes. VA also provides per diem payments to states for the care of eligible Veterans in State Homes.
